Month #1 of Living Without | Headphones

Note: This post is a follow up of my earlier post which talks about 2014 as an 'Year of Living Without'.

The 31 days without using Headphones end today. Living without them wasn't tough, but I felt their absence throughout this duration. Headphones are like spectacles to me. Almost a part of my body 5 days a week. On an average, I use my headphones close to 6 hours during the weekdays. I felt that it was a bit too much, and hence this month tried to live without them.

Talking about the experience - with a month without my headphones, I found too much noise around me. The headphones used to do their best in numbing them. And I couldn't do anything about it. I got used to that gradually. You cannot control every parameter of your life. At times you've just got to live with it and accept it with open arms.

No headphones meant no music too. And that was the worst part. Occasionally, the mind ran its own parallel process to compensate the absence of music. The music starved brain generated its own unique playlist of songs that I rarely listened to. Quite a few 'भूले-बिसरे गीत' played silently in my mind. I was almost wearing a virtual headset during such times.

These 31 days have taught me that I need to minimize my use of headphones if I want to save my ears for the future. My ears have never felt more healthy and receptive than before. A controlled usage would do good in the long run.

The next month is going to be tough. I will try to live without a smartphone. And it will be very tough since I've not lived without one in the last 5 years. The Tablet will also be shelved. A colleague at work has arranged for a 'dumb' phone and it will be used for the entire duration. Most of my music remains on cloud - so there will again be less music next month. Perhaps the 'Vividh Bharti' FM will be the savior. Only exception - recording 1SE everyday would still be on with the regular (smart) phone, and I will have to be very careful that I don't do anything else with the beast.

Looking forward for the next month. :)
